I always think about a story I read in Australia - a guy had chronic back pain, went to see all kinds of spinal specialists, chriopractors, etc

Took treatments costing thousands of dollars, but nothing worked. One day, his chiropractor mentioned in passing that there was a problem with the patient's feet (fallen arches) and recommended he see an orthopedist.
The orthopedist immediately said "Oh, your feet problems are what's calling your back pain. I can set you up with some of those rubbery inner soles, customised for your feet for $500"
The patient said "No thanks", went to the chemist and basically bought the generic version for $20 and had no more problems
