They had a belief (and, I suppose, still do) that disrupting the proceedings would be enough to make room for a takeover by force/judicial fiat

like, there's a clause about reading out the tallies, and they thought if that was stopped, then no one could legally be certified as the winner, and then *mumble mumble* courts' hands are tied and it goes to a bake-off that they just declare themselves the winner of. Trying to use the legal system as magic incantations instead of formalities.
