The Pittsburgh Penguins hired Kyle Dubas as its president of hockey operations, the team announced Thursday. Here’s what you need to know:

Dubas, 37, becomes just the second person to hold this position in the history of the franchise.

Dubas spent the past five seasons as the Toronto Maple Leafs’ general manager but parted ways with the team on May 19.

Backstory

The Maple Leafs reached the Stanley Cup playoffs in each of Dubas’ five seasons as GM, but they won only one playoff round. He joins a Penguins team that was the NHL’s oldest last season and missed the postseason for the first time in 17 years.

Despite three Stanley Cup wins since 2009, the Penguins are 1-5 in postseason series since winning the second of consecutive titles in 2017.

The Maple Leafs’ .651 points percentage during Dubas’ GM tenure ranked fifth in the NHL
