they thought hogwarts invulnerable. the raid caught them with their pants down.
potter chased them because he was the only one who knew what was happening, and the death mark was a final "eff you" from the departing death eaters. the whole thing was also inherently necessary so that snape could save both malfoy and potter without either of them knowing it. I don't thing more explosions really changes any of that.
