Pence's comments make it sound like they were more interested in keeping him from certifying than in keeping him safe.

He did not trust them to not spirit him away if he got in the vehicle.
That could be them just erring on the side of keeping the protectee safe, but Pence seemed to be saying that wasn't what he was getting from their request.
Which says more about Pence and his relationship with Trump than it does his protection detail.
