I just noticed the color coding today. To your IM, I believe that is the ideal strategery.

Find the most obvious group of four that couldn't be anything else. Submit.
Find the next most obvious group of four from the smaller group. Submit.
Now you've only got to partition the last eight into two groups.
Waffle has a similar strategery. Eliminate the things that can't possibly be anything else first. Reduce it to a simpler problem.
