NHL Mock Draft 2023: Bedard, Fantilli, Carlsson lead the way as Pronman picks all seven rounds

Corey Pronman
Jun 21, 2023

With the draft one week away, it’s time for me to attempt the ridiculous: projecting the entire 2023 NHL Draft from picks 1 to 224. This exercise is my best attempt to predict how I think the draft will unfold. The major decision points of the draft are Anaheim at No. 2, Columbus at No. 3, and Montreal at No. 5. In a draft that has several excellent defensemen but not a high number of them, where do the top blueliners go and how early? Who drafts Matvei Michkov? Those are the big questions as we head closer to the draft. Team summaries of each organization’s draft hauls will be found at the end of the article.

Complete guide to the 2023 NHL Draft.

First Round
1. Chicago Blackhawks: Connor Bedard, C, Regina (WHL)

This one has been settled for a while. Bedard may break camp as Chicago’s first-line center.

2. Anaheim Ducks: Adam Fantilli, C, Michigan (BIG10)

With a week to go until the draft I don’t think there’s a ton of clarity in the league on who goes second overall. Half the people in the NHL think it will be Fantilli, half the league thinks it will be Leo Carlsson. It’s considered very close between the two players with a lot of teams, but I think at the end of the day everything Fantilli is as a player will win out and make him the selection.

3. Columbus Blue Jackets: Leo Carlsson, C, Orebro (SWEDEN)

If Anaheim goes Carlsson, I think Columbus is very high on Fantilli and would pick him. If Fantilli goes at No. 2, I’m unsure what happens here. I think there are people in the organization who are super high on both Carlsson and Smith and people in the league think they could go either way.

4. San Jose Sharks: William Smith, C, Usa U-18 (NTDP)

If Smith went No. 3 I think the Sharks would love to add a big center in Carlsson. Smith seems the most likely candidate at this pick and most people in the league feel those top four centers will be the first four picks in some order. I think Matvei Michkov and David Reinbacher have to at least be considered by the Sharks but I believe it’s much more likely for them to pick a center.

5. Montreal Canadiens: David Reinbacher, D, Kloten (SWISS)

If the Sharks go in a different direction at four I think this will be Smith. If not, it gets interesting. The Reinbacher and Ryan Leonard noise has been amplified in the last few weeks and people in the league are convinced it will be one or the other if Montreal doesn’t go down the Michkov route. I wouldn’t be so confident about what they will do. They held their cards pretty well last season at No. 1 overall even if by the closing few days it became obvious. I don’t think anyone in the league actually knows who they’re picking, but based on all the information I’ve gleaned of late, my bet is Reinbacher if I had to pick a name.

6. Arizona Coyotes: Dalibor Dvorsky, C, Aik (SWEDEN-2)

Arizona is the most interesting team in the draft with picks at six and 12. They have a pressing organizational need for defensemen. The two picks allow them the possibility to take some risks. Is it Michkov? Possibly, but people around the league think they would be more likely to take that shot at 12 as opposed to six and letting an excellent player get by them. The three names I’ve heard with them the most are Leonard, Reinbacher and Dalibor Dvorsky. Some may ask why Dvorsky? They drafted two centers last season with high picks and Barrett Hayton has a good season. Any of those guys could be moved to the wing, and centers will always get priority in the draft. Dvorsky’s momentum in the league is real and he provides the high compete element GM Bill Armstrong has talked about adding to his system.

7. Philadelphia Flyers: Ryan Leonard, RW, Usa U-18 (NTDP)

Philly is where Michkov watch gets interesting given their new management group and a mandate to rebuild. It’s hard to say what the new group’s tendencies are, but Leonard would fit in with what the Flyers have typically valued. I don’t see Reinbacher getting past seven, though, if he got to this point.

8. Washington Capitals: Matvei Michkov, RW, Ska St. Petersburg (RUSSIA)

The often-asked question in the league is whether this is Michkov’s floor. Some are convinced there is no way he gets by Washington. Some in the league are less sold he’s their guy. I can easily see one of the U.S. program kids or Nate Danielson otherwise. If Dvorsky doesn’t go to Arizona I don’t see him getting by Washington at No. 8.

9. Detroit Red Wings: Gabriel Perreault, RW, Usa U-18 (NTDP)

Detroit is in a very interesting spot at Nos. 9 and 17. They need skill/scoring but ideally, you walk away with a good defense prospect too. I don’t think you can guarantee Reinbacher, Tom Willander or Dmitri Simashev are still on the board at 17. So do you go Willander at No. 9? Some in the league feel that is a real possibility for Detroit. In this mock I have them opting for elite skill in Perreault, which gives their organization legit scoring talent alongside Lucas Raymond. I think either outcome is realistic. The big question is deep into a rebuild, what do you do if Michkov is available? I would think he would be a Red Wing in that scenario.

10. St. Louis Blues: Tom Willander, D, Rogle Jr. (SWEDEN-JR.)

The Blues have a pressing need for centers and defensemen, but defense is arguably even more pressing. It would be ideal if the board lined up like this and they took Willander. If not they can pivot to someone like Nate Danielson presuming he doesn’t go ahead. If both Willander and Danielson go before 10, which isn’t unrealistic, it would put them in an interesting bind where most of the best players available are wings.

11. Vancouver Canucks: Nate Danielson, C, Brandon (WHL)

The Canucks situation is almost identical to the Blues, with one major caveat, that they pick one slot later! That further increases the odds that, like the Blues, they are staring at BPAs who are wings in a system full of wings. That begs the question from many in the NHL for both those organizations: At what point do you think about Dmitri Simashev if Willander and Danielson are gone? Or is this where wingers like Zach Benson start going?

12. Arizona Coyotes: Matthew Wood, RW, Uconn (H-EAST)

Arizona has a lot of directions they can go with six and 12. My theory has been they try to walk away with a forward and a defenseman. The issue is the best defenseman in this scenario is a Russian. Can a team without an NHL building get into the business of recruiting a KHL player with the 12th overall pick? Getting Reinbacher or Willander at six would solve those issues. Alternatively, they target a big winger with high-end skill in Wood who can play with the skilled centers in their organization. I do wonder about Zach Benson at 12 here, but I suspect Arizona will want to get bigger if they have a choice.

13. Buffalo Sabres: Dmitri Simashev, D, Yaroslavl Jr. (RUSSIA-JR.)

Buffalo is an organization I’ve circled in the pre-draft process to take a swing on the Lokomotiv kids. They have a young, talented team who scored a lot of goals last season. They have good young talent at all positions. It sets them up perfectly for the home run swing at Simashev or Danil But. A blue line with Rasmus Dahlin, Owen Power, Mattias Samuelsson and Dmitri Simashev could be a Stanley Cup contender group.

14. Pittsburgh Penguins: Zach Benson, LW, Winnipeg (WHL)

After taking Owen Pickering last season, if Pittsburgh keeps this pick, which feels like a 50/50 proposition, I highly suspect they look to add skill and that has been the suspicion around the league as well. Benson, Brayden Yager, Colby Barlow and Gabe Perreault if he gets to this range all seem like very likely possibilities.

15. Nashville Predators: Samuel Honzek, LW, Vancouver (WHL)

I suspect Nashville will have a lot of options at 15 to take a very toolsy athlete. I’ve heard David Edstrom and Quentin Musty rumored here. Danil But would make a lot of sense for them, but that would be a lot of Russian exposure high in the draft for them in recent years. Honzek provides nearly the same upside without as much risk and I suspect he will go higher than Edstrom or Musty. He’s a wing, but I think in the industry there is a hope he can be converted to a center.

16. Calgary Flames: Colby Barlow, LW, Owen Sound (OHL)

Figuring out Barlow’s landing spot is a bit difficult. I could see him close to 10 or 20, depending on which version of the player a team believes is legit. Is it the OHL scoring machine? Or the Team Canada version who looks like a hard-working two-way guy who may not be the most gifted offensively? My guess is he ends up somewhere in between there for those reasons. I could see Calgary tempted by Axel Sandin Pellikka here due to their organizational need for defense as well.

17. Detroit Red Wings: Danil But, LW, Yaroslavl Jr. (RUSSIA-JR.)

I’ve heard people in the league project Sandin Pellikka to Detroit at 17 here. I have a hard time seeing it based on the traits they typically develop in defensemen, but they do need a power-play QB type in the organization with Filip Hronek out. But, Barlow or Honzek would fit their types a lot more. With two high firsts and a strong history of recruiting Russians, Detroit can take a chance on But who many in the league think is a top-10 player on ability.

18. Winnipeg Jets: Oliver Moore, C, Usa U-18 (NTDP)

I think in an ideal world Winnipeg would like to get bigger up front, or add a defenseman to their pipeline. Edstrom makes sense here, as does Oliver Bonk. Eighteen may be a touch too high for those guys so I think Moore or Brayden Yager make more sense on pure ability.

19. Chicago Blackhawks: Brayden Yager, C, Moose Jaw (WHL)

Yager could well be gone by 19, but a lot of people in the league have circled him as a potential faller due to the season he had. I still think he will be a solid first-rounder and will go right around this range. He would give Chicago another strong forward prospect to add to their system.

20. Seattle Kraken: Axel Sandin Pellikka, D, Skelleftea Jr. (SWEDEN-JR.)

Sandin Pellikka may not get to 20 because he’s the most skilled defenseman in a draft light on high-end blueliners, but he’s also 5-foot-11 and I think that may scare off teams from a premium pick. He and Seattle would be a good match because they need a top D prospect. I could see Quentin Musty as a possibility here as well.

21. Minnesota Wild: David Edstrom, C, Frolunda Jr. (SWEDEN-JR.)

I feel if I didn’t give the Wild a center at 21 Russo’s Army would hang me upside down. With that said, Edstron, Calum Ritchie or someone like Moore or Yager if they get this far feel like distinct possibilities.

22. Philadelphia Flyers: Oliver Bonk, D, London (OHL)

After adding a highly talented winger at seven, Philly addresses their defensive depth at 22 with a big, mobile blueliner in Bonk who can move the puck. I have to imagine this is the floor for Sandin Pellikka as well.

23. New York Rangers: Calum Ritchie, C, Oshawa (OHL)

I think the Rangers will be in a prime spot to add a good premium position player at 23. I think Bonk and Edstrom both could be the pick if available at 23 which isn’t guaranteed. Alternatively, Ritchie I don’t see falling much further.

24. Nashville Predators: Quentin Musty, LW, Sudbury (OHL)

In an ideal world, I think Nashville would love to add a blueliner with either 15 or 24, but that’s not the way the board played. Musty and Ritchie seem like realistic possibilities, or Eduard Sale if the Predators really want to take a swing on talent.

25. St. Louis Blues: Etienne Morin, D, Moncton (QMJHL)

Ideally, the Blues would like to see centers like Edstrom or Ritchie get to them at 25, but otherwise, they can continue to build out their blue line with names like Morin, Tanner Molendyk or Lukas Dragicevic to add much-needed depth at that position.

26. San Jose Sharks: Michael Hrabal, G, Omaha (USHL)

With two first-round picks, the Sharks use the 26th pick to add the top-ranked goalie in this draft in the 6-foot-7 Hrabal, who is athletic as well. This could be a spot to add a defenseman as well for the Sharks, but they have such a pressing need in net, and if they don’t take Hrabal he’s going shortly after that.

27. Colorado Avalanche: Tanner Molendyk, D, Saskatoon (WHL)

Molendyk’s stock went up with a strong postseason and I expect him to be a late-day-one pick as a result. Colorado highly values the skating and athleticism Molendyk brings. Bradly Nadeau, Danny Nelson or Carson Rekhopf are possibilities here for the same reasons as well.

28. Toronto Maple Leafs: Eduard Sale, LW, Brno (CZECHIA)

It’s been hard to pin down where Sale will go. I’m not talking to a lot of NHL folks in the draft leadup who are saying how excited they would be to take him. At a certain point though despite his inconsistencies he’s way too talented to last much longer. If the Leafs decided to add at their blue line I could see Morin or Dragicevic as their type.

29. St. Louis Blues: Charlie Stramel, C, Wisconsin (BIG10)

Stramel will likely go a lot lower than previously expected after a tough draft season but I still expect him to sneak into the first round due to his great athletic tools and track record. He would add important depth to the Blues center position as a hard-to-play-against type.

30. Carolina Hurricanes: Gavin Brindley, C, Michigan (BIG10)

Most people would expect Carolina to target skill at this spot. Bradly Nadeau, Mikhail Gulyayev and Dragicevic are all possibilities but Brindley checks the skill and compete boxes they prioritize with emphasis even though he is very undersized. This is likely a floor for Sale as well.

31. Montreal Canadiens: Bradly Nadeau, LW, Penticton (BCHL)

After going defense at five, Montreal has a chance here to add offense. Center depth would be ideal here, so they could go after Danny Nelson, Carson Rekhopf or Anton Wahlberg, but I have them here targeting a highly skilled goal scorer in Nadeau.

32. Vegas Golden Knights: Danny Nelson, C, Usa U-18 (NTDP)

Nelson didn’t have an amazing draft season but I think he has a good chance to be a late first still. He’s a big, athletic player who can play both center and defense and works hard. Sounds a lot like the recipe of player Vegas just used to win a Cup.
