It looked like Prigozhin had the advantage and had gotten the jump on the Russian army. Why give that up to go live in exile until he's assassinated?

This outcome doesn't make sense to me. Unless he received intel that led him to believe he couldn't reach his target and this was his best escape option. This whole seemed to rely on avoiding conflict in Moscow -- either through PR or by moving quickly enough that it didn't mire into a siege.
