Don’t think Putin is capable of clear strategic thinking right now. I think it may be more likely than not, that this heralds the end of the war.

If the war drags on, Prigozhin’s status as a perceived Russian leader in waiting will increase. Killing Prigozhin and maintaining the war, weakens Putin’s position even further. So bringing a halt to the war (under the guise that they’ve achieved their objectives) and subsequently killing Prigozhin is a possible route Putin may take in order to maintain his rule.
