So how do you determine if a direct to streaming service movie is a success or not anyway?

With theatrical, it seems more straightforward. You know how much the movie cost and then you know theatrical box office, then Streaming/DVD rentals and purchases, then ancillaries and merchandising.

I guess with streaming you start with number of views and try to put a dollar amount to each view, but since you're selling a subscription this is all a conglomeration and it's hard to tell what affect that movie had on retaining that customer. There are things I have a streaming service for and things I watch because I happen to have a streaming service.

I suppose maybe you could weight the number of views the first week of release assuming that if someone watches it immediately after it's available they were likely anticipating it and thus it's a specific factor as to why they have the subscription.

I guess you can also measure social media engagement as that is free advertisement for your service. Merchandising and ancillary are two things that are directly comparable to theatrical.

It looks like the budget for Extraction 2 was $70M. How does Netflix know if they made their money back on it?
