The dude was born wealthy, went to Princeton, got cushy jobs. His chosen narrative was that the greatest innovators break the rules.
When he hooked in some legendary old guys (not just PH) he was able to sell the fantasy of being an Explorer. He made people feel like they were in that elite club of Everest climbers who have titles like Sir.
