He was born into wealth, Ivy League, everything came easy. He wanted to be a famous explorer.

This is a very complex story.
He was selling membership into the elite explorers who are called Sir. He created a facsimile of an elite research station, including expedition team photos, signing a flag, old dudes telling their national geographic stories.
He made them feel like they were in that club.
