His statement about shooting someone on 5th Avenue and not losing support is even more true now than it was when he said it.

The only strategy to win the Republican nomination is to wait and see if by any small chance something (like a conviction maybe) removes him from the race, and then try to be in position to pick up his supporters. If you attack him, I don't think you're getting his supporters.
