I read this book - Explorers House - about the founding and history of NatGeo. It ends with the corporatization of the company.

Before that, it was basically a small bespoke operation, but then they started growing with multiple executives, VPs, etc. Evidently, they grew too big for what they were supposed to be. Imagine that the Explorers Club put out a newsletter (maybe they do?) That's what National Geographic should be. But instead of shrinking the corporate structure, they've laid off their content creators.
Keep in mind that National Geographic is *jointly owned* by Disney and the non-profit National Geographic Society. Maybe Disney needs to just turn over their share to the Society?
P.S. Great book. INCREDIBLE story. As with everything else in the 19th century, it traces its origins back to Alexander Graham Bell.
