It enabled them to trade for Mike Hampton, who helped get them to the World Series in 2000. When Hampton left in free agency to sign with the Rockies (because of “the great school system” lol), the draft pick the Mets got in compensation was used on some guy named David Wright.
Bobby Bo gets all the headlines because lolMets but there are a few much worse deferred money contracts.
