Houston schools have been taken over by the state. How's it been going? Blaming tech errors, some teachers were sent emails saying they'd been fired.

Houston Independent School District officials are looking into "system failures" that led to employees receiving termination messages announcing they'd been fired from their jobs.

The district acknowledged the error on Monday, according to KHOU's Cory McCord, who reports that the number of employees who received the messages remains unknown.

"HISD is aware of a recent incident involving termination messages that were mistakenly sent to a group employees," a district spokesperson told McCord. "The incident occurred due to system failures. Immediate action has been taken to rectify the situation, and effected [sic] employees have been notified about the error."

The spokesperson confirmed to McCord that those who received messages are still employed with the district, and that officials are working to identify the issue and ensure it never occurs again.

"We are actively working to resolve the problem and implement measures to prevent this type of error from happening again in the future," the spokesperson told McCord.

Monday's accidental firing messages come at a time of broad reorganization within HISD engineered by its new leader, Superintendent Mike Miles. A former charter school CEO and one-time superintendent of Dallas Independent School District, Miles has promised to implement sweeping changes to the employment structure of HISD's central leadership and alter hiring practices at a number of the district's 274 schools. Earlier this month, Miles outlined plans that would require teachers at 29 HISD campuses to reapply for their jobs for the coming school year.

Last week HISD's state-appointed board of managers approved Miles' $2.2 billion budget for the 2023-24 school year. Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner recently predicted that the ongoing takeover and reconstitution of the district by the Texas Education Agency could last as long as seven years.
