Most of my childhood was that. Also don't have kids and aren't around many of them, so no idea if this is still a thing with some parents

I think my older brother does this to his kids a little bit, because he believes everything my parents did was right, but he's not beer strong willed, usually just puts it away and threatens to serve it for breakfast.

I never thought about how messed up that was. Poor or not, turning food into a huge deal esp veggies, is not going to help develop healthy habits.
