For me, Twitter was useful from a citizen reporter perspective

It was a great way to get micro news on a specific topic, often in real time. Part of that was the format of the platform but most of it was the ubiquitous nature of it. With Twitter's long, slow death spiral, the user base has fragmented to many different minor options. Their formats are fine but without the weight of the users solidifying behind one platform, it will be hard to replicate the value that Twitter provided.
I despise Facebook, but they probably have the best chance to recreate that critical mass.
