The program today at the library was A Taste of the Pacific. A lady from Guam gave a presentation and then it was time to eat.

We had Calamansi, which I understand is a sour citrus pulped whole and made into a lemonade like drink. Guyuria, a hard fried dough and frosted (basically a twisted cookie). Bun~elos (pretend that is a tilde over the n) a donut hole shaped banana fritter. And grilled chicken with red rice.

The Calamansi was made to their liking but for me it was too sweet (I also don't like overly sweet lemonade). The Guyuria was sweet and not that memorable. The Bunelos, well I like almost anything banana so they were fine.

The grilled chicken was good, even very good. Unfortunately as I'm trying to be a pescetarian, the last chicken I had was at the town Juneteenth celebration where I think I had the best smoked chicken I've had in my life. So the chicken paled a little bit in comparison.

The star of the show for me was the red rice. They were flavored with Annatto, a spice and natural red food coloring from seeds off the Achiote tree. The tree evidently produces year round in Guam. With garlic, onion, and salt, the Annatto forward rice was the hit of the program for me.

I told the woman who made it how much I loved the rice. She said "You have to come see me on Saturdays at the farmer's market". So I guess I will.

I had a moment of bliss when enjoying my second portion of red rice when I realized I was listening to Hotel California sung in Chmorro. It was a perfectly lovely early evening.
