yeah, there doesn't have to be a proximal cause. time and gravity can do it. rain can help. maybe even teeny tiny earthquakes or big trucks.

I'm betting they don't have any (or enough) geotech monitors installed. there's a giant copper mine near Salt Lake that's had a few slides in the last 10 years, all predicted well in advance because they had a bunch of GPS-enabled and/or LIDAR monitors installed. "oh look, it moved 5cm last week. we should probs evacuate the pit."
