One reason is the perp is like 80, if he dies before being found guilty then he is NOT guilty. (this is true if he dies during appeals...

I remember a case where some notorious drug gang leader was convicted and had real estate, sports cars and limos, ton of gold...all usual props of bad ass pimpery, and they had to give it all back to the mother when he was killed in prison as he was appealing the conviction
