Avoid choice paralysis by the consumer. Between 4 and 6 is right. Be aware that some photos may show up in multiple categories.

I think around 10 photos is right. Navigating a site, if I clicked a category and found only 4 or 5 assets, I’d be disappointed. By putting the same photo in multiple categories, you have a better chance of it being noticed by someone who navigates to category A but not category B.
