Oh, it's far from likely Ron overcomes Trump. I won't argue that -- but this in and of itself isn't uncommon.

they all have to balance infrastructure vs income and I don't think that anyone in the GOP expected Trump to get this much stronger after all his various legal issues.
There'll be a case study when all these guys leave power about how none of them understood how fucked up their base was. I'm convinced McConnell would go back in time and convict him in the 2nd trial if he knew Trump would still be relevant after what he did on 1/6.
Like, even in the crazy-ass books of what's normal, leading an insurrection should impact your "law and order" voters' choices. But it didn't.
