Athens OH I think had 5k permanent residents at the time but >16k students. My grandfather lived in a one-stop-sign town in OH pre-WWII

The three dozen families there all knew each other because they all went to the same church and married each other. A couple of the farmers had varmint rifles. If anyone had "tried that" in their town, the residents would have just scowled, gone about their work, and then gossiped about it, not start shooting first.
