It's expert filmmaking that amounts to nothing. I didn't understand Oppenheimer's motivation or emotions anymore at the end of the film then I did when I walked in. The movie weirdly becomes an oppressed hero story where Strauss is the surprise villain at the end.
The movie only mentions the deaths in Japan a few times and gives it emotional weight of discussed facts. This was a 3 hour movie that didn't bother to go into (or couldn't) why Oppenheimer pivots from "we have to stop the Germans from using the bomb" to "Well, since we've got the bomb might as well end the war with Japan." He only states it as a fact that's going to happen, and we just move on.
The movie was way more interested in the government doing Oppenheimer wrong than it was truly going into the horror of the bombs he unleashed. It's only the theoretical bombs that could go off in the future that the movie and Oppenheimer are concerned with. Not the actual ones that lost their lives due to the actual bombs used in Japan.
