I strongly disagree that the script and direction aren't made to be sympathetic to Oppenheimer and make him someone you at least partly root for. It's the nature of storytelling when you give him someone who betrays him that gets their comeuppance. Why else structure the whole movie around the security clearance hearings?

I didn't need Oppenheimer portrayed as a monster. Just a lot more neutrally. However, if Nolan had chosen to make him a monster there's plenty of films (Taxi Driver, There Will Be Blood, Breaking Bad, Ozark) that show the humanity in someone who does awful things. I don't find that boring. Plus, if Nolan can make Senate confirmation hearing somewhat riveting, I'm sure he can pull of an interesting monster.

To me, if you take out the hearings and the concentration on Strauss, you end up with a much stronger story that doesn't have to give him a hero arc.
