I don't think we're meant to think he's a monster. I don't think we're meant to think he's a hero. I think we're meant to make up our own minds.
I also didn't say everything is from Oppenheimer's POV (it is clearly not). I said it's from Nolan's POV about Oppenheimer (who I think he clearly identifies with from an intellectual sense, and is somewhat disturbed by this - but this is getting into psychoanalysis and outside the movie to some extent).
