Bill James was writing about it in the 80s. Nobody listened before Billy Beane.

There's a hilarious anecdote in Moneyball (the book) about one hitter. That person possessed such a dramatic difference in batting average and slugging that James just mailed the front office a letter, figuring he should tell somebody. He never heard back.
