STIS: we have a large wool rug from my partner's departed Aunt. she always had dogs, a few stinky ones, so the rug was always.. doggy.

we steam cleaned it, multiple times... shampoo, odor remover, etc. now that's it's drying out (nearly dry), it REEKS of dog pee and smells like an old basement. it's horrible and we're not sure what to do. the cleaning has seemingly made it so much worse.

Vinegar neutralizes a lot of odours but it's what you're willing to put in to save it. -- nm

We've had a lot of success with Nature's Miracle products for that kind of stuff if you haven't tried it and want to give it one last go -- nm

I would steam clean it, let it dry, steam clean it again, let it dry, steam clean it again, then put it in the most direct sunlight you can
