Lots of speculative theorizing about TFG's trials and election impact. Opinions appreciated

A few caveats up front -- I have very little hope that he'll ever see the inside of a prison. I know that we all have raging justice boners and want to see him dragged from a courtroom in chains, but I am too jaded to see that becoming a reality. I think it is far more likely that one of his true believers intentionally causes a hung jury in each trial.
Nonetheless, some small, vestigial, stubbornly optimistic part of me can't help but ponder the possibility that he is convicted. For the sake of argument, let's say it is one of the federal charges. Happy day!!
Well, happy for about half of the country. How will the MAGAts respond? Will they riot? Will this be their rallying cry that motivates them to get out and vote so that Dear Leader can pardon himself?
The last several election cycles have come down to who can get their voters to the polls. In 2016, Trump motivated the deplorables while Hillary motivate basically no one. In 2020, Biden motivated the anti-Trump voters to pull off an impressive win. 2024 was looking like the abortion rights election, which should favor a Biden re-election. I hope that the possibility of a Trump conviction doesn't end up swinging that momentum toward him. In any sensible world, his campaign would be dead in the water, but we no longer live in that world.

I’m not optimistic about the primaries, but by the time of the convention, I think even Fox News will be clamoring for somebody else on the ticket. -- nm

If any of these charges get to trial prior to the election (I would estimate a 75% chance that at least one of these does), I think he will be -- (edited)

He will be convicted. He will go to jail. He will not win election to POTUS or any other position.

i think his max sentence in the MAL docs case is 20 years? this judge could bang him for 35 if he's convicted. that's a death sentence

I don’t think any of it really matters when paired with the question of if he’s going to be elected president again. If that happens, we’re done. -- nm

I disagree with half of the country. They are smaller than that, just louder. -- nm

Agreed. It's about 35%. And I think those infuriated by Trump will be equally motivated. -- nm

They have money, lots of money, they have the bulk of media, police even in liberal areas, they are organized, they have guns -- nm

It’s generally put at 37% in most polling. So yeah, definitely not half the country. -- nm

This is the problem with reducing things to a binary. It makes each side seem equal in significance. -- nm

I won't quibble over the numbers. It could be 40%, maybe slightly lower. Suffice to say "a sizable portion" -- nm
