I tried searching for local organizations that you could volunteer at but the only one that was mentioned in news articles doesn't appear to be actual

You might know of a local organization that's a shelter that could use people.
If you still use Facebook you may be able to find a group that's coordinating volunteers as well. I know of the STL one but it's purely local.
As a last resort you could contact either the city or the United Way and they may be able to point you in the right direction.
