Knowing what we know now - that it had been circulating globally since Nov 2019 - hope was already lost of full eradication.

But many many lives could have been saved, and might yet still be saved, by better precautions.
Many lives were already saved in areas that had strong precautions through the first waves, until vaccines and paxlovid could arrive.
"Herd immunity" was utter bullshit. Bullshit that unnecessarily killed people.
Antimasking was stupid, but had a kernel of a point. Antivax was stupid, but had a kernel of a point. Wimping out on HVAC regulations was spineless.
