what is an "event"? there's nothing inherently more "event-y" about a toy movie and a biopic than any other typical summer movie

the Barbenheimer thing was a social media meme that just happened to catch fire spontaneously (as far as i can tell)

and the main reason it caught fire is because Chris Nolan is a dick about his release dates and refused to move when Barbie announced it wanted the same weekend.

if Barbie or Oppenheimer had been turrible, it would have been a one-weekend thing and they would have had the more usual 60-70% second-week drops.
