I dunno. I think the 70s through 00s fundamentally expanded the number of people who considered going to the movies to be a normal casual activity.

The price hikes surely play a role in the decline as well - that's certainly driven some of the decision-making - but even if it was half price, would that reduce the audience loss? I doubt it.
