If you’re up to date on Only Murders in the Building, please humor me on a theory (spoilers!)

Firstly, I don’t know if anyone’s ever noticed, but Meryl Streep is amazing! Can you imagine being an OMITB director having to give direction to Meryl Streep?

So, this season seems a little… different. It’s definitely got more gravitas, which I suspect has everything to do with Streep. She’s got so much talent, it rubs off on others. She makes Martin Short look like a serious actor.

What’s bugging me is that everyone seems to be behaving *just a little bit* differently. Oliver’s directing on Broadway again. Mabel’s being extroverted (heck, she’s the one rallying for them to do another season). Charles is being just a little bit more zany. It’s like someone’s telling us what they believe these people would be like, rather than how they actually are. It’s almost Lynch-ian. I wonder if this is all just a fantasy… specifically, Loretta’s fantasy. The season literally starts with her back story. What if Loretta’s telling us what she wishes her life was like, or - alternately - this is the story she’s telling the cops after she’s been arrested (i.e., she’s the murderer)? Certainly, Loretta isn’t just an addition to the cast, she’s a cornerstone of the season. She’s in almost every scene, and the scenes she’s not in, it’s stuff that could have been relayed to her later, like when Charles and Mabel are abducted and held in the basement. It feels like they’re trying to go out big. “Just another season” with “just another murder” for them to solve isn’t enough.

Also… can we really rule out that Charles, Oliver, or Mabel aren’t the murderer? It seems a little too convenient that we just immediately leap to the trio searching for a murderer without anyone even suggesting that maybe they need to investigate themselves, first.
