I mostly agree with Jake Roberts on this subject.

He was talking about the DDT, but it holds true for other moves as well. The DDT was his finisher, but is now a common move. Roberts stance is that it isn't a finisher anymore because nobody can do it as well as he did it.

I would also suggest that another kayfabe explanation is that people see a devastating move and try to work out how they can kick out after taking it. Someone did it for the destroyer and passed along the info to others.
