I was at a recruiting event for students a few years back and there was interesting conversation on this.

These would have been kids that were babies when 9/11 happened, probably no more than 3 years old at oldest. None of them remembered it obviously, but they all agreed on one thing, the "event" for their generation was the Great Recession in 2008-2009. They talked about how they remember parents/friends losing jobs, the general doom and gloom, etc.
Granted, I'm more than a decade older than them, but it was interesting to see how two events just a handful of years apart were split between a generation.
