I have a really dumb question. The travel agency I booked my Japan trip with is giving me a SIM card upon arrival. Why would I need that? -- nm

Keep in mind that what that SIM card gives you is a phone number in that other country. So, you have the opposite situation of using your US phone

Like colin said, it's for cheaper/faster internet. Not all phones have SIM slots anymore though and your phone may not be unlocked to be able to use.

T-Mobile is good for that but your speed may vary. Sometimes it's great, sometimes it's not. -- nm

SIM card will get you on mobile internet with your phone. your US provider might work over there, but it'll generally be slow or cost a lot of money. -- nm

Thx! My service won't cost extra for data and text, but this is good to know.
