Like colin said, it's for cheaper/faster internet. Not all phones have SIM slots anymore though and your phone may not be unlocked to be able to use.

If you're making payments on your phone through your carrier, you won't be able to use it unless you pay that off and contact them to "unlock" your phone.
If you have a newer iPhone, they've moved entirely to eSim and there's no slot for it.
If you have an international plan on your phone, it's not strictly necessary but would save you the $10/day or whatever your US network would charge you.
