I would check out pmb's suggestion. The Chicago Athletic Club is pretty awesome, and definitely modern.
Otherwise, my friends who prefer modern, boutique-ish hotels have had great things to say about The Hoxton.
Thompson Chicago might be another one to look at. It's more traditional feeling, but kind of has a Continental vibe to it at the same time.
