There are a few steps to safely clean sneakers. You want to use a towel and brush to get as much of the excess dirt off before you start.

I like to use sneaker cleaners like Reshoevn8r or Jason Markk, both are good. Put some in a small bowl of water. A few squirts will do.
After getting the excess dirt off you're going to use a hard bristle brush, dunk it in the bowl and then scrub the sole of the sneakers. I pick all of the crap out like little rocks and such and then scrub it hard. No need to go easy, it's the sole.
After that you use a medium softness brush and going in sections use the same cleaning solution to clean the outside of the sneakers. I would remove the insoles and clean those separately with the same brush. You should clean everything from the tongue to the inside lining. As you clean you should wipe off everything with a dry towel. Once that's done a quick wipe off again with a damp towel will be enough. That's it.
Let them air dry.
Put new laces in if you can't get them clean in the wash.
