"still sold nowhere as many copies as Nevermind" is a pretty weak point in a debate about artistic merit, OR a debate about record industry economics

In Utero was a great album, remarked on *at the time* for its audacious anti commercialism, for being a giant fuck you to bandwagoners, MTV, and record execs alike.
It can/should be compared to Nevermind in an artistic sense, and there will be pros and cons for each. For example: accessible v. challenging, hooky v. raw, etc.
It should not be compared to Nevermind in a mainstream popularity sense and definitely not in a sales = popularity sense.
