any handy STers around? I was largely successful in changing a doorknob for the first time last night but hit an unexpected snag

Everything was easy enough, but now the latch isn't catching.
I'm guessing that the new strikeplate isn't lined up exactly right, but
I don't know if it's too high/low/far front/far back.
I'm not able to see where the latch is vis a vis the hole in the strikeplate
when the door closes, so I don't know how to troubleshoot this.

One tip I read suggested that the strikeplate is probably a little too high/low -
they suggested putting lipstick on the latch and a piece of tape over the strikeplate
to see what adjustment needs to be made, and just use a carbide bit to grind down
the top/bottom of the hole in the strikeplate.

any other suggestions?
