Let's talk about roster mismanagement for a moment. They got a 2nd and 5th for their multi-time All-Pro.

They traded their higher second-round pick, which turned out to be a first-round pick, for Chase Claypool.
They're currently trying to trade Claypool, who has been an unmitigated disaster, for a fifth or (more likely) 6th round pick...if they can even trade him. They may just have to cut him.
Also, Chicago had the most cap space in the league this offseason, money that could have gone to Smith. Instead, they paid two other linebackers, most notably Tremain Edmunds.
Thus far in 2023, PFF has graded Roquan Smith as 89.6 (All-Pro level), while Edmunds has a 55.3 (sub-replacement level). Smith is the #4 LB independent of position. Edmunds is #100.
The Bears are paying Edmunds $42 million in 23/24 while choosing not to pay Smith, the superior player, who will make $45 million in 23/24.
Decision-making like that is how a team winds up picking first in the draft and doesn't get better.
