I forget which company it was, but they said they solved the shoplifting "problem" by hiring actual people to work in their stores.

I like self checkout, but it's not surprising that having employees man registers and generally being around would be a deterrent. Having one poor hapless soul standing around trying to monitor 20 self checkout registers is asking for shrinkage.
And some amount of the shrinkage isn't even intentional. It's user error when doing self checkout. They said they had done analysis and their shrinkage was much less than what other similar retailers were reporting. It was at worst a break even proposition to hire people.
