In response to "this would probably be a good weekend to have an actual working House of Representatives -- nm" by hollywood big shot

I was thinking the same thing.

And here's a nightmare scenario that will keep me up at night. Over the weekend:

-- Hezbollah, Syria, Iran, and maybe a few others openly declare support for Hamas
-- The United States openly declares support for Israel and the Biden Administration prepares a package of arms and monetary aid to Isreal
-- Qatar and Turkey at least privately support Hamas, maybe even offering public support (tacitly or explicitly)
-- Iran (and maybe others?) increases its efforts to supply arms to Hamas; those arms are sourced from North Korea, Russia, and China

Then next week:

-- Iran declares war on Israel
-- The U.S. and NATO declare they will defend Israel if attacked
-- While Iran is preparing to attack by sea and air, anti-Israeli groups in Lebanon launch a surprise coordinated attack; Iranian involvement or support is suspected (or even confirmed)
-- Israel invades Lebanon
-- Syria and Iran attack Israel
-- China begins actively supplying arms and military aid to its allies in the Middle East (to the same extent that the U.S. and NATO are supporting Israel)
-- China also sends troops, tanks, planes, and military equipment to Sudan and Egypt (solely to protect their allies and interests, of course -- as a precautionary measure)
-- While the rest of the world is distracted, North Korea decides to use this opportunity to invade South Korea

Meanwhile, the U.S. House of Representatives spends the week attempting to elect a new Speaker. Unsuccessfully.

Since the House is unable to meet to consider declarations of war, the Biden Administration relies on the Authorization to Use Military Force and other regulations to respond militarily short of declaring war. The American public goes into full meltdown in arguments over the President's actions and powers/authority to do so.

In the midst of all this chaos, China decides to take more islands in the South China see, or maybe even invade Taiwan.

And then things escalate from there.
