there was huge coverage at the time that a MAJOR character was killed in that book but the media was very careful not to spoil exactly who.

obviously, you heard somewhere who it was and over time your mind melded these memories into one and you came to believe that mass media spoiled it.

just a theory but these sorts of things happen all the time and cause problems with eyewitness testimony in courtrooms.
