yep. all about them not wanting to either miss the boat, or compete/pay more. people also lie about that stuff for leverage all the time tho.

I've called that particular bluff before. offered x, "I have another offer for 1.3x."
"oh, I can't go that high. you should totally take that one."
"uhhh... maybe I'm flexible, this seems like a better place to work."
and maybe true, but I'm skeptical. we did hire him in the end.
