So a perfect game is one where no-on makes it to base on a hit? Or the bat never meets the ball? What does "perfect" mean? -- nm

no hits, no walks, no errors, no runs. the ball can hit the bat, the bat can put the ball in play, but each batter is retired in succession.

Perfect means two things -- a perfect pitching performance (no walks or hits) and a perfect fielding performance (no errors). -- nm

So a hit that results in an out still allows it to be "perfect" but would that allow it to be a "no hitter"? -- nm

A "no-hitter" means no hits. A perfect game means no nothin'.

Ah. I see that I am stumbling on a definition. A "hit" to me is the ball and bat connecting regardless of whether it's eventually caught.

Yes. Contact that results in an out is not a hit. -- nm

(Actually, that's not strictly true, but we'll go with it.) -- nm

I'm not sure if there's a baseball rule where there isn't a "except in this odd situation" you could tack on to it. -- nm

Yes, hits = base runners. contact = ball and bat making cracky sounds. -- nm
