because there are no foul balls - once the batsman hits the ball, it can go in any direction

A batsman is out when:
The bowler bowls the ball and the ball hits his wickets
The batsman is caught out
The ball hits the batsmans legs (but not the bat) when he is standing right in front of the wickets
The batsman hits the ball and runs to the opposite wicket, but a fielder collects the ball, throws and hits the wicket before the batsman gets there (like being caught between two bases)
There are other ways, but those are the most common
